Tooth Extractions in Maple

Gentle Removal for Better Oral Health

At VJ Dentistry in Maple, Dr. Vini Joseph always attempts to save a natural tooth first. However, when a tooth is too severely damaged, decayed, or infected to be restored, an extraction becomes the safest and most effective solution. Whether it's a routine extraction or an urgent situation, our team ensures every patient is as comfortable as possible throughout the process.

We welcome new patients and offer same-day emergency appointments for acute pain and broken teeth — serving Maple, Vaughan, and the surrounding GTA communities

Simple vs. Surgical Extractions

Simple Extractions

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is fully visible above the gumline. Dr. Vini Joseph loosens the tooth with a dental instrument called an elevator and gently removes it with forceps. The area is numbed beforehand so you feel pressure but no pain. Simple extractions are quick, often completed in just a few minutes.

Surgical Extractions

A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is impacted (still partially or fully under the gum), has broken off at the gumline, or has curved roots that make simple removal difficult. This involves a small incision in the gum and is still performed under local anaesthetic. Dr. Vini Joseph will walk you through exactly what to expect before beginning.

What to Expect on the Day

  • Step 1 - Examination: Dr. Vini Joseph reviews your X-rays and examines the tooth to confirm extraction is necessary and determine the best approach.

  • Step 2 - Anaesthesia: The area is fully numbed with a local anaesthetic. You will feel pressure and movement but no sharp pain.

  • Step 3 - Extraction: The tooth is gently loosened and removed. The process is typically faster than most patients expect.

  • Step 4 - Aftercare instructions: You will be given clear written and verbal instructions on how to care for the site at home.

Aftercare - The First 24 -72 Hours

Proper aftercare is essential to prevent dry socket and ensure smooth healing. Follow these guidelines after your extraction at VJ Dentistry:

  • Bite gently on the gauze pad provided for 30–45 minutes to control bleeding

  • Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully, or using a straw for the first 24 hours — this can dislodge the blood clot

  • Apply a cold pack to the outside of your cheek in 10-minute intervals to reduce swelling

  • Stick to soft foods such as yogurt, soup, scrambled eggs, and mashed potatoes for the first 2–3 days

  • Do not smoke for at least 48–72 hours - smoking significantly increases the risk of dry socket

  • Take any prescribed or recommended pain medication as directed

  • After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water to keep the area clean

Most patients are back to their normal routine within 1–3 days. If you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection after your extraction, call us immediately at 905-417-5557.

Replacing an Extracted Tooth

If a permanent tooth has been extracted, we strongly recommend considering a replacement option to prevent bone loss and shifting of surrounding teeth. At VJ Dentistry, we offer several tooth replacement solutions:

  • Dental Implants - the most natural-looking and long-lasting option

  • Dental Bridges - a fixed restoration supported by adjacent teeth

  • Partial Dentures - a removable option when multiple teeth are missing

Dr. Vini Joseph will discuss your replacement options with you and help you choose the best solution for your needs, budget, and lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a tooth extraction hurt?

The tooth and surrounding area are fully numbed before the extraction begins, so you should not feel any pain — only pressure and movement. Any soreness after the anaesthetic wears off is manageable with over-the-counter pain medication and typically subsides within a few days.

How long does the healing process take?

The initial healing of the gum tissue usually takes 1–2 weeks. Full bone healing of the socket can take several months, but most patients feel completely normal within a week.

What is dry socket and how do I avoid it?

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site is dislodged before the wound heals. It causes a sharp, radiating pain and is one of the more common post-extraction complications. You can avoid it by not using straws, not rinsing forcefully, and not smoking in the days after your procedure.
