Crowns and Bridges in Maple

Restore Strength, Function & Appearance

Damaged or missing teeth can affect your ability to chew and smile confidently. At VJ Dentistry, we offer crowns and bridges in Maple to restore both function and aesthetics.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged, weakened, or discoloured tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Once cemented into place, the crown fully encases the visible portion of the tooth above the gumline.

Crowns are made from several materials, each with their own advantages:

  • Porcelain crowns - the most natural-looking option, ideal for front teeth

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) - strong and aesthetic, commonly used for back teeth

  • Zirconia crowns - extremely durable and tooth-coloured, ideal for back teeth under heavy chewing pressure

  • Full metal crowns - the most durable option, typically reserved for back molars where aesthetics are less of a concern

Dr. Vini Joseph will recommend the best material based on the location of the tooth, your bite, and your aesthetic goals.

When Is a Crown Recommended?

  • To protect a tooth that has been weakened by a large cavity or crack

  • To restore a tooth after a root canal treatment

  • To cover a severely discoloured or misshapen tooth

  • To anchor a dental bridge in place

  • To restore a dental implant

  • To strengthen a tooth that has had a very large filling

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (called pontics) that are anchored in place by crowns cemented onto the natural teeth on either side of the gap known as abutment teeth.

Bridges are a popular alternative to dental implants when the adjacent teeth are already in need of crowns, or when implant surgery is not suitable. They are permanently fixed in your mouth, so they function and feel like natural teeth.

Types of Bridges Available at VJ Dentistry

  • Traditional bridge — the most common type, supported by crowns on both adjacent teeth

  • Cantilever bridge — used when there is only one adjacent tooth available for support

  • Maryland bridge — a more conservative option that uses a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the backs of the adjacent teeth, with minimal alteration required

The Crown or Bridge Procedure - What to Expect

Getting a crown or bridge typically requires two visits to our Maple clinic:

  • Visit 1 - Consultation & preparation: Dr. Vini Joseph examines the tooth or gap, takes impressions or digital scans, and prepares the tooth by reshaping it slightly to accommodate the crown or bridge. A temporary crown or bridge is placed while your custom restoration is being crafted at the dental lab.

  • Visit 2 - Placement: Your custom crown or bridge is checked for fit, colour, and bite before being permanently cemented into place. Dr. Vini Joseph makes any final adjustments to ensure your bite feels natural and comfortable.

How to Care for Your Crown or Bridge

Crowns and bridges can last 10–15 years or longer with proper care. Here is how to keep your restoration in the best possible condition:

  • Brush twice daily and floss at least once per day, use floss threaders or interdental brushes under bridges

  • Avoid chewing on ice, hard candies, or other extremely hard foods that can crack or chip the crown

  • Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth

  • Attend your regular dental checkups at VJ Dentistry every 6 months

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental crowns last?

With proper care, porcelain and zirconia crowns typically last 10–20 years. The longevity depends on the material, your oral hygiene habits, and whether you grind your teeth. Dr. Vini Joseph will monitor your crowns at each checkup to catch any wear or issues early.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is fully numbed during the preparation appointment, so you should not feel any pain. Some sensitivity is normal in the days following the procedure but this typically resolves on its own. The temporary crown may feel slightly different from your natural teeth, this is normal and temporary.

Is a bridge better than an implant?

Both are excellent options and the best choice depends on your individual situation. Implants preserve the jawbone and do not require alteration of adjacent teeth making them the gold standard for tooth replacement. However, bridges are a faster, more affordable solution and work well when adjacent teeth already need crowns. Dr. Vini Joseph will help you weigh the options at your consultation.
