Summer in the GTA means backyard barbecues, trips to Wonderland, poolside lemonades, and long evenings on the patio. It's one of our favourite times of year and at VJ Dentistry, we love seeing our patients living it up.
But summer also comes with a surprising number of dental risks that most people never think about. Between sugary drinks, sports activities, travel, and irregular routines, it's one of the busiest seasons we see for preventable dental problems.
Here's what Dr. Vini Joseph wants every patient in Maple and Vaughan to know before the season gets into full swing.

1. The Hidden Dental Danger in Your Summer Drinks
This is the big one. Summer is peak season for drinks that quietly destroy enamel, often while you're having a great time.
The usual suspects:
• Lemonade and iced tea - incredibly acidic, often loaded with sugar
• Sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade), the acid content rivals soda
• Sparkling water with citrus - carbonation + citrus = enamel erosion over time
• Fruit smoothies - natural sugars that linger between teeth
• Alcoholic cocktails - dehydrating, acidic, and sugary all at once
Dr. Joseph's advice: Enjoy these drinks, just drink them with a meal rather than sipping throughout the day, use a straw when possible, and rinse with water afterward. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing so you're not scrubbing already-softened enamel.
And don't forget: water is your best friend in summer. It keeps you hydrated, neutralizes acid, and washes away sugar. Aim for plain, fluoridated tap water as your go-to.
2. Chlorine and Your Teeth, Yes, Really
If you're a regular swimmer whether in a backyard pool, community centre, or competitive lap swim, your teeth may be paying a price. Pool water is treated with chlorine, which lowers pH. Frequent, prolonged swimming in improperly balanced pools can cause what's known as "swimmer's calculus" - brown or yellowish staining on the teeth as well as gradual enamel erosion.
This is most commonly seen in competitive swimmers who train multiple hours per day, but even recreational swimmers who spend long hours in the pool over a summer season can notice changes.
What to do: Rinse your mouth with fresh water after swimming. Keep up with your regular brushing and flossing. If you swim frequently, mention it at your next checkup, we'll take a closer look at your enamel.
3. Sports Season = Dental Emergency Season
Summer in Vaughan and Maple is full of baseball leagues, soccer tournaments, cycling, skateboarding, and more. It's wonderful and it also means we see more dental injuries between June and September than any other time of year.
A knocked-out or chipped tooth is an emergency, and how you handle the first 30 minutes matters enormously.
If a tooth is knocked out:
• Pick it up by the crown (the white part) never touch the root
• Rinse it gently with water if dirty, do not scrub
• Try to place it back in the socket if possible, or keep it moist in milk or saliva
• Call us immediately, time is critical for reimplantation
Prevention tip: A custom-fitted mouthguard from VJ Dentistry is far more protective than the store-bought boil-and-bite variety, and far more comfortable to wear. Ask us about getting one made before the season kicks into gear.
4. BBQ Foods, What's Fine and What to Watch
Great news: most BBQ staples are perfectly fine for your teeth. Grilled chicken, burgers, corn on the cob, and veggie skewers are all solid choices.
A few things to be mindful of:
• Corn on the cob- great food, tricky for anyone with braces or recent dental work
• Hard candies and Freezies- a summer staple that's hard on enamel and fillings
• Sticky desserts (s'mores, caramel apples)- cling to teeth and are tough to clean off
• Ice- it's tempting to chew it on a hot day, but ice can chip teeth and damage enamel
The goal isn't to skip the fun, it's to rinse and brush afterward so sugar and acid don't sit on your teeth all evening.
5. Don't Let Summer Derail Your Routine
Summer throws off schedules. Kids are out of school, families are travelling, evenings run late. It's incredibly easy for brushing and flossing habits to slip, especially for children.
A few reminders:
• Pack a travel dental kit for any trips, a soft toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and floss takes up almost no space
• Keep bedtime routines consistent, especially for kids, they still need two minutes of brushing before sleep
• If you're away for more than a week, stock up on dental essentials before you go
• Summer is actually a great time to book those checkup appointments you've been putting off, we often have more availability in July and August
6. Thinking About a Smile Refresh Before Summer Events?
Summer is full of moments worth capturing,
weddings, graduations, family reunions, and celebrations. If you've been thinking about whitening, Invisalign, or even a simple cleaning and polish to brighten your smile, now is a great time to start.
At VJ Dentistry, we offer take-home whitening kits and in-chair options to suit your timeline and sensitivity level. Reach out to our Maple office and we'll recommend the right approach for you.
