What Is Oral Cancer Screening?
Oral cancer screening is a visual and physical examination of the soft tissues of your mouth, throat, and neck performed by Dr. Vini Joseph. The goal is to identify any abnormal tissue, lesions, or changes that could indicate early signs of oral cancer or pre-cancerous conditions - before they progress.
Oral cancer can develop on the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, and throat. Like most cancers, it is significantly more treatable when detected in its earliest stages.
Why Is Oral Cancer Screening Important?
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, oral cavity cancer is among the more common cancers diagnosed in Canada each year, and the majority of cases are diagnosed at a late stage - when treatment is more complex and outcomes are less favourable.
The challenge with oral cancer is that early lesions are often painless and easy to overlook. Patients may not notice anything unusual, and the changes can be subtle. Regular screening by a dental professional trained to recognize early warning signs is one of the most effective tools for early detection.
Who Is at Risk?
While oral cancer can occur in anyone, certain factors increase risk:
-
Tobacco use of any kind - cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or smokeless tobacco
-
Heavy alcohol consumption - particularly in combination with tobacco
-
Human papillomavirus (HPV) - especially HPV-16, increasingly linked to throat and tonsillar cancers
-
Excessive sun exposure - particularly relevant to lip cancer
-
Previous history of oral cancer or head and neck cancer
-
Age - risk increases significantly after age 40
-
A diet low in fruits and vegetables
Importantly, an increasing proportion of oral cancers - particularly those affecting the throat and tonsils - occur in younger, non-smoking patients with no traditional risk factors. This is why routine screening matters for everyone, not just those in higher-risk categories.
Warning Signs of Oral Cancer
See Dr. Vini Joseph promptly if you notice any of the following:
-
A sore in the mouth that does not heal within two weeks
-
A red or white patch on the gums, tongue, cheek, or elsewhere in the mouth
-
A lump, thickening, or rough spot inside the mouth
-
Persistent pain or soreness in the mouth or throat
-
Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the tongue or jaw
-
Numbness in the tongue or other areas of the mouth
-
A persistent sore throat, hoarseness, or change in voice
-
A lump in the neck
Do not wait and see if these resolve on their own. Early evaluation is always the right decision.
What Does Oral Cancer Screening Involve?
The screening at our Maple clinic is non-invasive, painless, and takes approximately 3–5 minutes as part of your regular checkup appointment:
1. Visual examination - Dr. Vini Joseph examines your lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, the floor of the mouth, and palate for any unusual changes in colour, texture, or shape.
2. Physical examination - The floor of the mouth, tongue, and sides of the jaw and neck are gently palpated (felt) to check for any unusual lumps, thickening, or swollen lymph nodes.
3. Follow-up - If anything unusual is identified, Dr. Vini Joseph will discuss the finding with you and recommend appropriate next steps, which may include monitoring, a referral for further assessment, or a biopsy if indicated.
In the majority of cases, nothing of concern is found and you leave with peace of mind. When something is flagged, the earlier it's caught, the better.
How Often Should You Have an Oral Cancer Screening?
We recommend an oral cancer screening at every routine dental checkup, typically every 6 months. For patients with one or more risk factors, particularly tobacco use, Dr. Vini Joseph may recommend more frequent monitoring.
If you have noticed any of the warning signs listed above, do not wait for your next scheduled checkup - call 905-417-5557 to book an earlier appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is oral cancer screening painful?
No. The screening is entirely non-invasive and painless. It involves a visual examination and gentle physical palpation and takes approximately 3–5 minutes as part of your checkup.
2. How much does oral cancer screening cost in Maple?
At VJ Dentistry, oral cancer screening is included as part of your comprehensive dental checkup at no separate charge. Most dental insurance plans cover routine checkups that include this screening.
3. What happens if something is found during the screening?
Dr. Vini Joseph will explain the finding clearly and calmly. In many cases, unusual areas are monitored over several weeks to see if they resolve on their own. If further investigation is needed, you may be referred to an oral surgeon or specialist for additional assessment or biopsy. Finding something early - even if it requires further evaluation is always a better outcome than a late-stage discovery.
4. Can oral cancer screening detect throat cancer?
Oral cancer screening at a dental office primarily covers the oral cavity - lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, floor of the mouth, and palate. The back of the throat and tonsillar areas are partially visible. For concerns specifically about the throat, an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist is better positioned to conduct a thorough assessment.
5. I don't smoke or drink. Do I still need oral cancer screening?
Yes. While tobacco and alcohol are the most well-known risk factors, oral cancer can develop in patients with no traditional risk factors including younger, healthy non-smokers. HPV-related oral cancers in particular can affect anyone. Routine screening is recommended for all adults regardless of lifestyle.
