Types of Braces Available at Our Maple Clinic
1. Metal Braces
The most commonly used type of braces - small metal brackets bonded to the front of each tooth, connected by a wire that is periodically tightened to gradually shift teeth into alignment. Modern metal braces are significantly smaller, more comfortable, and more effective than those of previous generations.
2. Ceramic (Clear) Braces
Ceramic braces work exactly like metal braces but use tooth-coloured or clear ceramic brackets that blend in with the natural colour of your teeth. They're a popular choice for older teens and adults who want the effectiveness of traditional braces with a less noticeable appearance.
3. Which Is Right for You?
Dr. Vini Joseph will discuss both options at your consultation, taking into account your treatment needs, budget, and aesthetic preferences. For patients with very mild to moderate alignment concerns who prefer a fully removable option, Invisalign may also be discussed as an alternative.
What Can Braces Fix?
Braces are particularly effective for:
-
Crowded or overlapping teeth
-
Widely spaced teeth and gaps
-
Overbite - upper teeth overlapping significantly over lower teeth
-
Underbite - lower jaw protruding forward
-
Crossbite - misalignment of the upper and lower jaws
-
Open bite - front teeth not meeting when the mouth is closed
-
Complex bite issues that may not be suitable for clear aligners.
How Much Do Braces Cost in Maple and Vaughan?
Braces pricing depends on the type selected and the complexity of your case:
-
Metal braces
-
Ceramic braces
Most dental insurance plans with orthodontic coverage provide partial reimbursement for braces. Our front desk team will check your plan before treatment begins.
The Braces Treatment Process
1. Consultation - Dr. Vini Joseph examines your teeth, takes X-rays, and creates a personalized treatment plan. Treatment duration and the most appropriate brace type are discussed.
2. Placement - Brackets are bonded to the front surface of your teeth. The wire is threaded through each bracket and secured. The appointment typically takes 1–2 hours.
3. Adjustments - Every 4–6 weeks, you'll return to our Maple clinic for a brief appointment where the wire is tightened or replaced to continue moving your teeth. This is also an opportunity to check progress and address any concerns.
4. Removal and retention - Once your teeth have reached their target position, the brackets are removed. A retainer is fitted immediately to hold your teeth in place while the bone stabilizes around the new positions.
Total treatment time typically ranges from 12 to 24 months depending on complexity.
Caring for Your Teeth During Braces Treatment
Good oral hygiene is essential during orthodontic treatment since brackets create more areas for plaque to accumulate:
-
Brush after every meal using a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste
-
Use interdental brushes or a water flosser to clean between brackets and under wires
-
Avoid sticky, hard, and chewy foods - these can damage brackets and wires
-
Attend your regular cleaning appointments at VJ Dentistry every 3–4 months during treatment (more frequent than usual, since plaque builds up faster with braces)
-
Wear a mouthguard if you play contact sports.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How long do braces take?
Most patients wear braces for 12 to 24 months. Simpler cases may be shorter; complex bite corrections may take longer. Dr. Vini Joseph will give you a realistic timeline at your consultation.
2. Do braces hurt?
You may feel soreness and pressure for a few days after placement and after each adjustment as your teeth begin to move. This is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. The brackets themselves may cause some initial irritation to the inside of your cheeks - orthodontic wax can help.
3. Can adults get braces in Maple?
Absolutely. Many of our patients at VJ Dentistry are adults choosing braces or Invisalign for the first time. There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment.
4. Braces or Invisalign - which should I choose?
Braces are generally more effective for complex alignment and bite issues. Invisalign is often preferable for mild to moderate cases where a removable, less visible option is desired. Dr. Vini Joseph will give you an honest recommendation based on your specific needs.
5. Are braces covered by insurance in Canada?
Most plans with orthodontic benefits cover a portion of braces treatment. Contact our Maple clinic and we'll check your coverage before your appointment.
